Lighting is the most important part of home decor. Lights are the mood setters. The entire look and the feel of a room is dependent on the lighting style.
Different rooms in a home are used for different activities so each has different lighting requirements as well. Like some are categorized as task areas which include kitchen, bathrooms, home office etc. while others can be categorized as living areas like bedrooms and family rooms.
Selecting lights for task areas is very simple as compared to selecting lights for living areas because task areas are used for specific activities rather than spending free time with family. So, you do not have to think about the mood and the environment you want to create for such areas which is a major concern for living areas.
For task area, ambient lighting can be used as the main illuminating source. They can fulfill both aesthetic as well as functional requirements simultaneously. For places that are used for some particular tasks(like a sink or counter top etc.) should be lighted with task lighting which will be focused light so that one can easily do the work there.
After ambient and task lighting, you can think about accent lights with which you can highlight some special features of the room like any wood work or a painting etc.
For planning lighting style for living areas, you should first go for accent lighting, then task lighting and finally ambient lighting, just opposite the way you chose for task areas.
With accent lights, you can draw special attention to certain features of the room like any painting, sculpture or any other show piece. Use task lights in places like reading area or over a pool table etc. and you can include ambient lighting where extra light is required.
So, lighting types are designed to work together to complete the home. After choosing the type you will want to choose the fixtures that match your style. Whatever your preference in lighting design, you are sure to find something that will accent your home beautifully.
